Feilding High School retain the New Zealand Schools Top 4 Championship. Album

Feilding High School retained the New Zealand Secondary Schools Top 4 Championship beating Southland Girls 29-12 in the final played at Arena Manawatu on Sunday 9th September.

The game was played in fine conditions but was marred by a 40 kilometre wind blowing down the ground.

Southland Girls’ won the toss and elected to play with the wind but just as Feilding High did to Hamilton Girls’ in the semi finals they controlled the ball and pinned Southland Girls’ in their own half.

Feilding High’s fullback Mackenzie Nuku scored two long range tries under the post which was followed by two exceptional tries by their right winger Lauren Basillie who showed great speed and ball skills. This was added to by a try from the back of the scrum by captain Amy Cokayne and after 25 minutes Feilding High led by 29-0 .

Southland Girls’ then fought back and just before halftime prop and captain Laura Buckingham scored a good try after a 30 meter bullocking run making the halftime score 29-5.

The second half stared sensationally when Georgia Mason of Southland Girls forced Feilding High into an error in their 22 and Alena Saili scored beside the post and with the conversion the score was 29-12.

Feilding High School then regrouped and using the strong wind played the remaining 25 minutes in the Southland Girls’ half but due to their resolute defence no more points were scored and the 29-12 scoreline was a good reflection of the match.

Amy Cokayne, the Feilding High captain who had a superb game both on defence and attack was named Player of the Match. Unfortunately Amy is returning to England after living here for 8 years and is aiming to play international rugby for England.

The 3rd v 4th playoff was won by Hamilton Girls’ High 20-12 over Tamaki College after having to come from behind at halftime.

The standard of rugby over the semi finals and finals was very high with 29 tries in 4 games and it was great to see the final was televised live by Sky Television.
